What We’ve Learned Building Technology for North American MGAs and the Road to MGA Policy Admin Suite 2.0

Insillion’s entry into the North American market was shaped by key conversations at ITC Vegas in 2023 and with our industry advisor, Christopher Lowell. From these discussions, a clear strategy for Insillion emerged. We decided to concentrate on the Managing General Agents (MGA) space, where we found a strong alignment between their business needs and our platform’s capabilities.

This marked a new chapter for Insillion.

  • Insillion traditionally served P&C, health, and life insurance carriers across India, the APAC region, and the Middle East.
  • In 2024, we began our United States operations with a specific focus on the MGA space.
  • Our objective is to offer our established, carrier-grade platform to MGAs through a flexible Pay-as-you-Grow pricing model.

After discovery calls with MGAs across different sizes and specialties, one theme came up again and again: launching a new MGA is a long, resource-intensive journey, and the right technology partner needs to support that journey from day one.

A key need, for example, is the ability to present early product prototypes to potential capacity providers or brokers.

To meet this demand, we launched Insillion’s 180-day no-commitment sandbox. This allows an MGA to test our platform and set up its product with no upfront costs, giving them a platform to build their products before going live and presenting it to capacity providers.

MGA Client Momentum: Going Live and Growing Fast

Our first MGA, client a personal lines auto rental insurance provider went live in just six weeks and has since expanded their distribution network significantly through our APIs. Clients across commercial and specialty lines have followed, each going live on the platform and building out from there.

Building InFlow: Insurance Workflow Automation

As we deepened our work in the MGA space, we noticed that; the insurance workflow automation solutions available were either too horizontal for insurance or priced and packaged for enterprise carriers; making them inaccessible for smaller MGAs.

So we built InFlow an insurance-specific workflow and process automation platform designed to handle the document-heavy workflows that slow underwriting teams down. For example;

  • Submission intake automation & Claims FNOL — using Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) to extract and validate submission / FNOL data, reducing manual handling and speeding up underwriting decisions

InFlow was built to scale for small and mid-size MGAs, not just enterprise carriers. And as AI capabilities continue to evolve, so does InFlow — what started as AI-powered document extraction is now growing into agentic capabilities that support faster underwriting decisions end-to-end.

What Two Years in the MGA Space Has Taught Us

Operating in this market has given us a clear picture of how MGAs actually work and what they need from their technology partners.

Faster decisions, leaner teams

MGAs move quickly. Where a carrier might go through multiple rounds of reviews before adopting a new tool, an MGA can identify an opportunity say, automating part of their submission workflow — and move to implementation within weeks. Smaller team sizes accelerate decision making. But that same lean structure means MGAs don't have the internal IT resources that carriers do, and lengthy custom development cycles simply don't work for them.

Agile configuration

Many MGAs start with a single capacity provider, then add more — each with their own guidelines, rate structures, and requirements. The product setup itself may need to change with each new relationship. MGAs need MGA software that lets them reconfigure quickly, without waiting on development cycles or technical resources.

Bordereaux reporting

In a multi-carrier setup, bordereaux templates differ across every capacity provider meaning unique reports for each one. This is a crucial factor for MGAs to maintain smooth relationships with capacity providers.

MGA Ecosystem

MGAs rarely operate in isolation. Day-to-day, they're working with:

All of this requires their Policy Administration system to integrate seamlessly with each of these players via APIs.

What We're Building Next: MGA Policy Admin 2.0

Everything we've learned from two years in this market has shaped what we're calling MGA Policy Admin 2.0 — Insillion's roadmap for solving the scaling challenges MGAs face as they grow from startup to established operation.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

  • A pre-built MGA ecosystem — Rather than building custom integrations one at a time, we're developing a partner ecosystem where the tools MGAs need most — TPAs, accounting systems, billing and finance platforms — are already connected to Insillion. Less time integrating, faster time to market.
    • Are you a technology provider offering services in compliance, TPA, accounting, or finance for MGAs? We'd love to include you in the Insillion MGA Ecosystem. Reach out to us at sales@insillion.com.
  • Functionality built for growth-stage MGAs — Features designed specifically for MGAs scaling into complex multi-carrier setups, including advanced bordereaux reporting that handles each capacity provider's unique requirements.
  • Access to a network of SME experts — Our work in the MGA space has connected us with accelerators, actuaries, product specialists, and talent experts. We're building out a way to connect MGAs with the right expertise at the right stage — whether that's underwriting, compliance, or capacity sourcing.
